The young adults and students from UOttawa, Carleton or Algonquin College are made very welcome in our congregation which has a special gift of making students feel that they belong no matter what their background. We understand the unique stresses that students are under during their years of studies as well as the challenges facing young adults just beginning their careers. Counselling/prayer and other kinds of support can be arranged with our Minister, Rev Laurie McKnight during times of special need and for encouragement.
Students are welcome to join the choir, take leadership in our youth led worship, café church which is held a few times a year when the students are here, and join the Council as a student rep if they so desire, take part in any ongoing study groups. Students are also encouraged to take part in any larger United Church Conferences such as Rendezvous, Youth Forum, pilgrimages, Kairos, Social Justice trips, interfaith events.
We also participate in the Open Table Ministry which is an ecumenical ministry in Sandy Hill that provides a monthly meal to any interested students/young adults on a Sunday evening throughout the school year as well as Pause Tables during the exam season. The meals are held on the designated Sunday at Centre 454 which is located in the lower hall of St Alban’s Anglican Church at the corner of Daly St and King Edward St. We usually provide the September meal and a meal in the winter months cooperating with other congregations. Please check out the link to the Open Table website for the specific dates.
We have also been taking part in the Church Crawl for UOttawa students during their Frosh week. It has been held on the first Saturday of September and is run like the Amazing Race, a scavenger hunt to churches around UOttawa with a great finale at the central UOttawa meeting place. We provide welcome, some food and games to the many students who enjoy the fun!
