Children of all ages are welcome in our congregation and we seek to provide for them a place of safety, learning and engagement where they can grow new friendships and explore their faith. When they enter our worship space they are welcome to sit with their family or to join the other children at a small table that has materials for their own learning and creativity. During the Time for the Young and Young at Heart in our worship service they are invited to join the Minister or other lay member for a time of learning about the theme of that day. Sometimes they participate in worship leadership by reading the scriptures, sharing their own artistic gifts, joining in with the choir, assisting in special liturgies, and always being welcomed to take part in Holy Communion and sometimes Baptism.
After they have experienced the early part of the worship service, they are invited to join our Children’s Ministry Co-ordinator in a room off the hall for a lesson geared to their age. We provide curriculum for children ranging in age from 3 to 12 years old using an ecumenical resource called the Seasons of the Spirit which teaches the stories of our faith and progressive Christian values emphasizing the questions and interests the children bring. After the worship and lessons are over the children always enjoy our time of refreshment and play in the hall when the faith community gathers.
Over the past nine years we have been able to employ a Children’s Ministry Co-ordinator who is often a university/college student or a member of the congregation, people who love children and want to share their faith and their own creative ideas. Of course, parents are also welcome to take part in this ministry and to share their own ideas to enhance this ministry.
